What is Canutillo, Texas like to live in? It is a green, rural pocket of El Paso County about 12 miles northwest of downtown, down at the Rio Grande where water rights mean grass, trees, and pecan orchards instead of desert.
Canutillo gives you country living without leaving the city behind. Because it sits at the Rio Grande elevation, the land is genuinely green, with crops, orchards, and room for horses, chickens, and other animals. The Canutillo school district is one of the top districts in the area, with award-winning athletics and music programs. Along the river you have the River Park Trail and Gallegos Park for walking, jogging, cycling, and bird watching, plus quick access to the Tom Mays section of Franklin Mountains State Park five to ten minutes away. You are only about five minutes from the outlet shops, a new mega Walmart, and I-10 via Artcraft Road, and homes here are still very affordable, including horse and acreage properties.
Canutillo is a great little area west of the Franklin Mountains, very close to the New Mexico border. The awesome thing about Canutillo is that it's the best of both worlds: it feels very rural while remaining close to El Paso.
Canutillo sits down at the Rio Grande elevation, which means there's significantly more water than in the surrounding desert areas. You'll see grass, trees, and pecan orchards galore. Folks are growing crops everywhere. It's a really unique space in the middle of what's essentially a desert. While the desert surrounding area doesn't have much water, down at the Rio Grande we have plenty. Canutillo takes advantage of this to create a rural setting that's genuinely green and lively.
The thing that really stands out is that Canutillo is super close to El Paso-located in El Paso County, just about 12 miles northwest of downtown El Paso. If you want a little bit more space, or if you're someone who wants horses, chickens, or other animals, Canutillo is an amazing place for that. Even though we filmed this in summer (July and August when it's warm), we've been out here in fall, winter, and spring, and the weather's really, really nice. With the rain we had in July, you can see how much green there is throughout the area.
Canutillo is a census-designated place in El Paso County. In 2010, its population was about 6,300, which represents a 23 percent increase since 2000, so the area is growing. One of the amazing things about Canutillo is that the school district is actually one of the top districts in the area. They've won numerous awards in athletics and have amazing bands and music programs. It's a very strong community when it comes to education, which is a big asset if you have kids.
Along the Rio Grande, there are parks and trails called the River Park Trail, which is great for bird watching. There are paved trails for walking, jogging, and riding. The area is popular with road cyclists because the country roads don't have tons of traffic, and you can go for miles and miles on relatively flat terrain. You can even raft or kayak down the river if you're interested in water activities.
One of the big parks in the area is Gallegos Park, which is beautiful and green. There are more than 19 trails covering 51 miles in this general area according to Traillink.com. The cool thing about this space is that you're going to feel like you're living out in the country-and you will be-while still remaining very close to shopping and amenities.
While Canutillo feels rural, you're not isolated. You're just five minutes at most from the outlet shops, which we've featured in other videos. You're very close to I-10 as well, via Art Craft Road, which is a new west side development. This area has a brand new mega Walmart, nice retail, higher-end gyms, and higher-end restaurants. There are also wineries in the area that are worth checking out.
The Tom Mays area of Franklin Mountain State Park is nearby-just five to ten minutes away. The grounds are amazing, and from Canutillo, you can drive a short distance and be up in the Franklin Mountains doing hiking and outdoor activities.
If you're looking for a place where you have more space, Canutillo offers something that newer construction in places like Horizon City doesn't provide. In Horizon City, newer homes are often pretty close together with rock walls separating properties. Builders try to fit as many homes as possible into available space to maximize profits. If you're more used to having room to breathe, Canutillo is a great option.
With more space and a rural setting, you'll also encounter more wildlife. You might see birds, killdeers, and all sorts of animals that you wouldn't typically see within city limits. This is part of the appeal for people who want a more natural, rural lifestyle.
Canutillo is still very, very affordable. We're starting to showcase and have listings in the area. We recently listed an amazing horse property with a remodeled home right off Bosque-a beautiful property that represents exactly what Canutillo offers: space, rural character, and potential for the lifestyle you want to live.
