Replacing the Old HVAC with a New One

What does it cost to replace an HVAC unit in El Paso? In this El Paso home, swapping out a 1999 split system for a new high-efficiency refrigerated unit ran $8,700 and took about one day.

We replace a worn-out air conditioning and heating system and walk through what El Paso homeowners should know. The old 1999 split unit used R-22 refrigerant, which is being phased out, and had reached the end of its 20 to 25 year life. The new setup is a higher-efficiency 16 SEER system (R-22 units were typically 13 SEER), meaning lower electricity use, which matters a lot in El Paso summers, and a refrigerated unit actually uses less energy than a rooftop evaporative cooler. A bonus of replacing the whole system is that it gets inspected and brought up to code. The crew was organized, communicated well, and cleaned up, and the install finished in a single day for $8,700.

Replacing the Old HVAC with a New One

Hi! Welcome to Living in El Paso, Texas. This is going to be a real barn burner because you are going to see us remove an old A.C. unit and get a brand new one. We're here with a couple gentlemen from Sobelas. We've got Carlos and Rick. Rick, nice. So these guys graciously agreed just to kind of help us understand kind of

what we're dealing with here. So this unit I think was put in in 1999. You guys were talking about that the refrigerant that this unit uses is called R-22. Correct. Okay, so and now that's being phased out, right? Yeah, but you see this how old? 1999. It does its job. It's ready to retire. Right. I was even talking about that, you know, because the blower is going out and we could

replace the blower, but this thing is at the end of its life. So 20 to 25 years for a unit. And then the next one that we put in is going to be 25 to 30 years. Okay. Obviously, if you don't know how big it is. Yeah, that's awesome too because when I, as a real estate agent, we do tons, whenever somebody buys a home, we do tons of home inspections. The inspector always

comes in and looks at the old unit and gripes about all of the things that aren't up to code. So that's awesome that when you do replace your unit, you also get everything kind of upgraded. It gets fully inspected, yeah. Yeah, that's great. So like these gentlemen were kind enough to kind of explain to me that what we have on my home is that we kind of have a split unit.

So we've got the, what would you call this part of the unit? I know this says gas furnace. Right, here's your A-frame coil. Okay. Here's your actual furnace. On the roof is where you have your condensing unit. Okay. So, and we were talking about, this is essentially where the cold air is generated or in the winter where the warm air is generated. Correct. Right. And then

on the top of my home, which we're going to show later, because you guys got to bring a crane in to get that thing off, right? But on the top of my house, you've got the condenser, which essentially moves that cool air or that warm air through the house. And it keeps that compressor from overheating and all of that in a different order. Keeps it all nice and cool up there. Even

though it's 126 degrees up there, that's its job to keep that little space cool. That's awesome. And then just one last thing. One of the things that we talked about when we were choosing which unit to go with, we were kind of talking about, you know, 14 sear, 16 sear. Can you guys explain what that means? Well, usually when R22 systems, they're all 13 sear. Some are even 12 I've seen

actually before. So now we're going to go with the 16 sear unit, which makes everything more more efficient. Sounds a little funny, but more healthier for our property. So it's essentially an energy efficiency. Correct. Yeah. So the higher the number, the more efficient. Yeah, the less electricity you'll use. Perfect. Good. Awesome. Because obviously in the summer, these things get

a lot of use and we burn a lot of electricity. Yeah, these things actually use less electricity than an evap cooler on the roof. Awesome. Yeah. So a new refrigerated unit will use less energy than an evap cooler. Yeah, that's great. Awesome. Well, we appreciate you guys and we look forward to getting this loud old beast out of here and getting that new hopefully quiet

one in there. When it turns on the blower, I filmed it this morning. It's like this whole thing is like shaking and it's like it's ready to jump out. Yeah, it's ready to just blow up. It'll look nice and clean. Awesome. Hey, appreciate you guys. Thank you. Okay, so after about one full day's work, we've got a new HVAC unit. Pretty excited. Out with the old,

in with the new, as they say. So basically we went with, now I don't know much about HVAC units, but we went with this Amana unit. There's a Goodman condenser on the roof. So we've got some footage of that, which we showed everybody. So for the most part, we're hoping that this new HVAC system lasts us another 22 years, more or less. And overall for Sobelus, very, very pleased.

They were very organized, good communication, cleaned up after themselves, explained to us everything that was happening. And so A plus for them. So we appreciate them. Total cost on this thing was $8,700. So that's not exactly the most fun $8,700 we've ever spent. But of course in El Paso in the summer, you're going to need AC. And then even in the winter, there's going to be

sometimes where you're going to need some heat. So overall, glad that we got the new unit in. Pretty pumped that it only took a day. And we will see you in the next episode.
