Living in El Paso
What is UTEP like? The University of Texas at El Paso sits on over 420 acres in the foothills of the Franklin Mountains and is America's leading Hispanic-serving university, enrolling more than 24,000 students.
Bilingual partner Alejandro Sosa takes you on a campus tour of UTEP. Founded in 1914 (originally at Fort Bliss, then relocated after a 1916 fire), the school has a student body that is 84 percent Hispanic and offers 169 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs. Highlights include the Mike Loya Academic Services building for financial aid and registration, the Union Building with a theater, cinema, and cafeteria, and a nod to the school's mining roots with the Practice Mine tunnel bored 40 feet into the Franklin Mountains. Sports and events center on the Sun Bowl stadium (opened 1963, now seating over 51,000) and the Don Haskins Center, which hosts graduations, Miners basketball, and most of El Paso's big concerts, from Pitbull to Bad Bunny.
Hi, and welcome to Living in El Paso, Texas. My name is Alejandro Sosa. I'm a real estate agent here at Peña El Paso Realty Group. And today we're going to take a tour of University of Texas at El Paso, best known as UTEP. Now the university is sitting in over 420 acres. It is a huge campus. And what you're going to see around the campus is going to be a lot of these bikes as well as scooters.
And that's going to facilitate the students to move around all over campus. The University of Texas at El Paso was first established in 1914 and it was actually located in Fort Bliss. Fort Bliss is one of the biggest military bases right here in the United States. After a fire destroyed the campus in 1916, it was decided to relocate the campus over here in the foothills of the Franken Mountains.
We are standing right in front of Mike Loya Academic Services building right here in UTEP. This building is very popular for students because you can get a lot of information regarding financial aid and register for classes. The University of Texas at El Paso is America's leading Hispanic-serving university with a student body that is 84% Hispanic. And it enrolls more than 24,000 students in 169 bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs.
Right now we're standing right in front of this beautiful art piece called the Mining Mines. The Mining Mines is an iconic piece of public art installed in 2010 to enhance the University of Texas at El Paso campus. Right now we're standing right here at the Union Building. This building is very popular with students because it has a theater, a cinema and a cafeteria.
A lot of students like to come here and relax, take lunch and unwind from their classes. Now we're standing right in front of a very cool place right here on campus called the Practice Mine. The Practice Mine is a tunnel borrowed 40 feet into the side of the Franklin Mountains. It allows students to enroll in metal mining and mining machinery to practice their mining skills in a laboratory underneath the earth's surface.
Now we're standing right in front of this beautiful stadium called the Sun Bowl, home of the Miners. Now this stadium was opened in 1963. Over 31,000 seats were available. Over the years there has been a lot of improvements and now it seats over 51,000 students.
And lastly we're standing right here in front of the Don Haskis Center. This is a very popular building right here on campus because this is where we're going to have the graduation ceremonies and the basketball teams are going to also play in here. Now we don't have a lot of places here in El Paso for big artists to come and perform. So every time there's a big concert or anything happening it's going to be here in this center.
We had everybody from Ricky Martin and Ricky Iglesias, Cirque du Soleil, Pitbull, Bad Bunny. Everybody that comes is going to perform right here. We want to thank you for coming along on this tour with us. If you have any questions please leave a comment down below.
If you need to reach out to us all our information is going to be down in the description. We want to thank you again for your time and we'll see you in the next video. Thank you.
